2019 Asian Cup: A Look Back at the Group Stage Results
As we approach the 2019 Asian Cup’s all-important final, competition is really heating up. Which teams have been in the best form so far?
Despite being only the first round of the AFC’s premier international competition, the group stage at the 2019 Asian Cup certainly didn’t disappoint in terms of excitement and drama. While most fan favorites did advance to the final tournament’s knockout stage, as expected, there were definitely still a couple of surprises that few saw coming.
At this point, most of you are likely already looking forward to the quarter-finals and the matches that lie beyond that. That makes it pretty much the perfect time to give this year’s group stage a last once-over and finally nail down which teams have the best chances of making it all the way to the final.
Despite being the group’s top-ranked side in the FIFA World Rankings, the hosts didn’t have quite as easy a time as most fans expected. They did finish on top of the group, but made it through with only a single win, which they picked up against India.
Thailand, who were similarly heavily favored, suffered a big 1-4 loss against rivals India, but nonetheless finished in second to advance. Somewhat surprisingly, it was the Indian team who were left out in the cold, with Bahrain’s resulting record ranking them first among the third-placed teams.
