Setting the stage for this year’s tennis season might be a heavy burden, but the 2019 Australian Open looks to be more than up to the task.
When it comes to the kind of action and drama only the absolute best tennis players in the world can bring us, few other competitions can even come close to the Grand Slams. Last year’s Australian Open was a perfect example, with women’s singles winner Caroline Wozniacki’s epic second-round comeback and subsequent career-first title run setting the bar ridiculously high for the rest of the year. And it didn’t end there either.
From Garbiñe Muguruza, who just the year before bested Venus Williams at the Wimbledon Championships final, shockingly losing to Su-Wei Hsieh and dropping out of the tournament in just the second round, Simona Halep and Lauren Davis putting each other through a wringer in a match that lasted nearly four hours, to then-No. 1 Rafael Nadal fending off five break points before finally being forced to retire due to injury, and Roger Federer cruising to his second consecutive and career-sixth title at Melbourne Park, last year’s Australian Open really was an amazing watch from start to finish.
